Northwell Opens Two New medical Imaging Schools At Its Center For Learning And Innovation

Northwell Health cut the ribbon on two new medical imaging schools at its Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI) in New Hyde Park on Nov. 14. The new School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography – created with SUNY Empire State University as an academic partner – will teach the next generation of diagnostic medical sonographers. Additionally, Northwell’s Peconic Bay School of Radiologic Technology opened a second campus at CLI, doubling its class size.

Medical imaging is critical to diagnosis and treatment in almost all aspects of modern medicine. The two new schools are educating students in these fields to meet the growing demand for specialist technologists who use x-ray and ultrasound machines to generate medical images.

“These two new schools at the Center for Learning and Innovation will help keep Northwell’s employees on the cutting edge of developments in medical imaging, which means better outcomes for our patients,” said Michael Dowling, Northwell Health president and CEO. “Our commitment to education will help to raise health in our communities now and into the future.”

The School of Radiologic Technology offers a 24-month program that is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and certified by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Radiologic Technology.

The School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a 20-month program that consists of online courses through SUNY Empire and didactic and clinical  experiences at Northwell Health facilities.

Both programs use state-of-the-art technology at Northwell’s Center for Learning and Innovation. Students will learn in new classrooms and use high-end medical equipment to simulate different scenarios and prepare them to enter the field.

“The schools of Radiologic Technology and Diagnostic Medical Sonography will train a whole new generation of medical imaging specialists to meet the growing demand for these critical services,” said Jason Naidich, MD, senior vice president and chief learning and innovation officer at Northwell Health. “Our students will benefit from an extraordinary educational and clinical environment, in which they will learn from leading experts throughout Northwell Health across our extensive network of hospitals and outpatient facilities. We are grateful for the unique partnership with Empire State University which will allow our students to supplement their education with flexible, online courses to fit into their busy schedules.”

“Our partnership with Northwell Health underscores a shared commitment to lifelong learning, innovation, and meeting workforce demands in the communities we serve,” said Empire State University Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs Nathan Gonyea, Ph.D. “We are honored to work with Northwell employees as they advance their education and their careers through our flexible online degree programs.”
