Town of Babylon to Mark 25th Anniversary of September 11th; New Post-9/11 Memorial to Be Revealed for the First Time

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the Town of Babylon will gather at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Hometown Memorial on Ocean Parkway on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. for its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and will uncover a permanent memorial to those whose lives were claimed in the years that followed.
The new Post-9/11 Memorial recognizes residents who became ill or died as a result of their service and exposure in the aftermath of the attacks. Fourteen names are inscribed on the memorial at its dedication. It joins the Hometown Memorial, which honors the Babylon residents killed on September 11, 2001.
The new memorial has stood covered at the site since installation. The families of the fourteen honored residents have not yet seen it. They will see their loved ones’ names for the first time when the covering comes off on September 11th.
“September 11th did not end when that day was over,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “For too many families in our community, the years that followed brought illness, loss, and a sacrifice that has gone unmarked for far too long. We wanted these families to see these names together, for the first time, on the day that changed everything for them. This memorial is a permanent promise that behind every name is a person who was loved, and a family who has carried their memory forward. They will never be forgotten.”
The memorial was brought to life through the work of the Town Board, the Post-9/11 Memorial Committee, and the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association, working alongside the families of those honored. Each family has been personally invited to attend.
The Town intends the site to serve as a lasting place of reflection where families can return for generations, and where the sacrifices made in the aftermath of September 11th remain part of the community’s story.
The ceremony is open to the public. All residents are invited to attend.
