A recent activity provided insightful perspective into the history of American territories for fifth grade students at Daniel Street Elementary School and William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District as they engaged in an educational journey in which they experienced key areas of Native American life. The activity was part of a program by Journeys into American Indian Territories, a group that provides curriculum-based learning experiences for elementary students.
Students learned about important Native American values such as self-discipline, community cooperation and listening. Students also learned about hunting, cooking and the myriad ways Native Americans utilized animal resources in their daily lives.
Additionally, students viewed items used during these times such as clothing, utensils and shelters and concluded the activity by creating an animal-inspired design for a shield.
