Harborfields High School students Megan Hickey, Elizabeth Kelly and Sara Tovar-Guacaneme earned New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Awards from State Sen. Mario Mattera. The Youth Leadership Recognition Award program honors exceptional future leaders, recognizing sophomores, juniors and seniors for their academic prowess as well as leadership in extracurricular and volunteer activities.
Sen. Mattera visited the school on June 2 to present the three students with their award plaques. “Each of you were selected because you are a leader,” he told the students. “And I’m so proud to be here because I love leaders. I love people that get involved in their community and school. Continue doing what you’re doing, and when you decide to go away to college, remember that we need you back here, because leaders like you need to stay in our community to keep our community what it is.”
“It’s really an honor and a privilege to earn this, and I’m just very grateful,” Kelly said.
“I’m glad I was able to help out, and as long as someone got something good out of what I’ve done, I’m just grateful and happy,” Tovar-Guacaneme said.
