The Suffolk County Radio Club Will Be Hosting Amateur Radio Field Day On June 24th

On Saturday, June 24th the Suffolk County Radio Club will be hosting Amateur Radio Field Day. This is an annual event where amateur radio operators (hams) set up temporary stations and contact others around the country. The purpose of Field Day is to help train for an actual emergency where conventional means of communication have been damaged. Amateur radio operators have the capability of contacting other hams around the world without the use of cellular phone networks or the internet. This resource has been invaluable in the recent past during earthquakes and severe weather events around the world. The public is invited to see amateur radio in action. Stations will be set up outdoors at 40 Grand Avenue, Shirley, NY (NE corner of McGraw St.) and will be open to the public from 2PM until 5PM on Saturday the 26th.

The Suffolk County Radio Club is Long Island’s oldest amateur radio club, founded in 1947. Each year, Field Day is visited by local dignitaries and groups such as the Scouts. More information is available at: suffolkcountyradioclub.com and at: arrl.org.
