After their meeting, students in Sylvan Avenue Elementary’s wellness club stumbled upon an injured mourning dove on the grounds outside of their school. With the help and guidance from Strong Island Animal Rescue, the students and staff members Sarah Post and Alyssa Malave cared for the bird before bringing it to Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown for additional care.
After close to one week, students received a call from Sweetbriar Nature Center, saying that the dove had made a full recovery and asked for the student’s help in releasing it back to the wild. With the help of the compassionate club members, the bird was successfully released into the open air outside of the elementary school.
