Sunken Meadow State Park Schedule Of Events

Sunken Meadow State Park, in Kings Park, will offer the following programs during spring 2024.  There will be a fee of $4.00 per adult, $4.00 per child, and children under 3 are free.  An $8.00 parking fee per car will be charged as of April 1st, on the weekends.  A $10.00 fee starts as of Memorial Day weekend and ends after Labor Day weekend. Advanced reservations are required. Reservations are taken two weeks prior to the program. If you are unable to keep your reservation, please cancel so others may have the opportunity to attend.  Please be prompt.  If others are waiting, your place may be given to them if you have not arrived when the program starts. Tiny Tots (Ages 3 – 5)
Held Thursdays 10:30 – 11:30 am 
Explore the natural world around you. These programs will connect children and their parents with nature through short walks, animal visitors, and crafts.  Children ages 3 – 5.

Spring Sunset Stroll: (Family Program)
Sunday April 14th  7:00 pm ~ 8:30 pm 
Bring your camera and your walking shoes as you try to capture the beauty of the spring sunset from multiple angles. Enjoy an early evening stroll along the sandy beaches, forests, and marshes of Sunken Meadow State Park. (Meet at the Nature Center. Field 1)

Fossil Finds: (Children’s Program)
Sunday April 21st  1:30 pm ~ 3:00 pm 
Take a journey through time as you explore what kinds of plants and animals lived on Earth in the past. Learn about Earth’s natural history as you observe real fossils and simulate how they form. Here you will also explore how fossils are found and how you can discover clues about the past by comparing them to life today. (Meet at the Nature Center. Field 1) Ages 10 and up recommended.

Celebrate Trails Day Hike: (Family Program)
Sunday April 27th  10:00 am ~ 12:00 pm  
New York State Parks turn 100 years old this year and they want to invite you to celebrate! Join them along a guided 3-mile hike through Sunken Meadow and Nissequogue River State Park. Make sure you come prepared with water, boots, sunscreen, and appropriate clothes for an intermediate-level hiking experience. Happy Trails! (Meet at Field 4 Parking Lot).

Glacial Erratic Hike: (Family Program) 
Sunday May 5th  1:30 pm ~ 3:00 pm 
There is a lot you can learn about the past from sand, pebbles, and giant boulders. Follow along with an environmental educator on a hike up to Sunken Meadow’s highest elevations to learn about the park’s geological history!  This is an intermediate-level hike, so make sure you bring water, boots, sunscreen, and anything else you might need to travel up and down moderate inclines. (Meet at Field 3, near bathrooms on boardwalk).

Welcome Back Osprey: (Family Program)
Sunday May 12th 1:30 pm ~ 3:00pm 
This beautiful raptor feeds almost exclusively on fish, so the marsh here at Sunken Meadow is a perfect place for them to raise their chicks! Join them for a walk to observe them at their nest platform and discover more about their amazing adaptations. (Meet at Field 3, near bathrooms on boardwalk).

Marsh Meander: (Family Program) 
Sunday June 2nd 1:30 pm ~ 3:00 pm 
Sunken Meadow’s salt marsh is teeming with life! Follow along the marsh trails with a professional environmental educator to learn about the birds, plants, insects, and marine life that call Sunken Meadow home. This program for all ages will discuss food webs, ecosystems, and responsible animal handling techniques. Be prepared to walk on sand and make sure to bring water and sunscreen. (Meet at Field 3, near bathrooms on boardwalk).

Rainbow Lantern Walk: (Family Program)
Saturday June 28th 8:00 pm ~ 9:30pm  
Head to Sunken Meadow State Park for one of their popular lantern walks with a Pride Month twist! Have you ever wanted to explore the park after dark? Now is your chance, and the ambiance will be enhanced with rainbow lanterns! (Meet at the Nature Center. Field 1).
