Joseph A. Edgar Elementary School students recently learned more about the town of Sound Beach when they participated in an assembly program featuring local filmmaker Leon Adler and author and Sound Beach Civic Association President Bea Ruberto on June 7. Adler directed the film, “The History Upon Our Shores: Sound Beach, NY,” based on the book, “Sound Beach: Our Town, Our Story,” authored by Ruberto.

The event for third and fourth graders, coordinated Rocky Point’s Director of Humanities Melinda Brooks, gave students a glimpse into the process of storytelling, research and the effects of preserving local history.

The students welcomed the creative duo and presented artistic gifts of thanks for their visit. The school also welcomed Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, who shared some of their experiences and works representing the local community.
