Northwell, Nassau Community College Launch Earn & Learn Program, Promoting Scholarship And Career Growth In Health Care

Northwell Health and Nassau Community College (NCC) today announced a new education and scholarship program to train entry-level medical associate candidates to become medical assistants in a wide range of outpatient health care settings. The program starts in January 2023.

The inaugural Earn & Learn Medical Assistant Program is open to eligible current Northwell employees and external candidates who may apply for the program that includes a scholarship from the health system to earn a medical assistant certificate from Nassau Community College. A major component of the program will include medical associates starting work at Northwell Health, while simultaneously beginning their coursework at NCC in the one-year medical assistant certificate program. Northwell will pay tuition and fees of about $10,000 per person and the Nassau Community College Foundation will cover book expenses for the first initial year of the program.

“The medical assistant field is expected to grow exponentially in the next five years,” said Maria Conzatti, Ed.D., interim president of Nassau Community College. “As the largest single community college campus in New York state, Nassau Community College is happy to match the critical needs of our medical partners with the educational aspirations of people in our communities.”

The one-year program was designed to train and retain medical assistants in the competitive health care industry. Students work four days a week and take coursework at NC on Fridays, two evenings per week and Saturdays. The work-education program also provides study sessions, mentors, team building and clinical placement upon graduation. Upon successful performance in their medical associate role and the completion of the required coursework, the student will be promoted to a certified medical assistant position and commit to working at Northwell in this role for a minimum of one year.

“Medical assistants are key members of the health care team in physician practices and other outpatient medical facilities – they are often the first clinical staff member patients encounter,” said Kathleen Donovan, Northwell’s regional human resource officer in ambulatory services. “We’re excited to partner with Nassau Community College to design this innovative, hands-on training program for medical assistants as we look to prepare our current and future workforce for careers in health care.”

Coursework for medical assistants include: administrative and clinical documentation, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, CPR and basic life support training, medical coding among other clinical areas. Medical assistants perform patient care under the direct supervision of a physician or nurse.
