Merrick schools are among more than 60 Long Island districts — and 830 nationwide— to be named a Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation.

They were selected for their role in supporting music as part of a well-rounded education. Dr. Richard Nasto, the district’s music coordinator based in Chatterton School, called the recognition an honor.

“It acknowledges the dedication and support of our students, parents, staff, school administrators, board of education and music department,” he said. “It reminds all of us that Merrick is a place where music thrives and plays an integral part in a student’s educational success.”

The award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders who have made music education part of a well-rounded education. Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
