The Babylon Town Board honored the first responders whose courage, training, and professionalism helped save the lives of 16 people during a dramatic rescue at Adventureland in East Farmingdale on June 20th.
The rescue unfolded after a mechanical malfunction left 15 children and one adult chaperone stranded on the Wave Twister ride, suspended more than 50 feet above the ground. For nearly three hours, emergency personnel worked carefully and methodically to bring each passenger safely back to the ground.
Firefighters from local departments, along with members of the Suffolk County Police Emergency Services Unit and emergency medical personnel, used ladder trucks, specialized rescue equipment, and harness systems to remove each rider one at a time. Thanks to their extensive training, coordination, and professionalism, all 16 individuals were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported.At the Babylon Town Board meeting on August 8, 2026, town officials recognized the responders who played a critical role in the successful rescue operation.
Babylon Town Councilman and Chairman of Public Safety Terence McSweeney praised the responders for their preparation and ability to put their training into action during a high-pressure emergency.
“As Chairman of Public Safety, I was incredibly proud to see these responders use the training they received and apply it perfectly when it mattered most,” McSweeney said. “Every drill, every exercise, and every hour of preparation came together that night to save lives. Their professionalism, courage, and dedication ensured that every person on that ride was brought safely back to their families.”
McSweeney said the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of first responders and the critical role they play in protecting communities.
“It makes you stop and think: What would our world look like without our first responders?”McSweeney said. “When people are facing their most frightening moments, these men and women are the ones who answer the call. They run toward danger because they are committed to helping others.”
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said the rescue demonstrated the importance of preparedness, teamwork, and having highly trained emergency personnel ready to respond.
Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Rudy Sunderman emphasized that successful rescues are the result of ongoing preparation and commitment.
“A rescue of this complexity does not happen by accident,” Sunderman said. “It is the result of countless hours of training, planning, and teamwork. The responders involved demonstrated the highest level of skill and dedication, and their actions reflect the outstanding emergency services we have throughout Suffolk County.”
“Our first responders are the people we rely on during our most challenging moments,” Richberg said. “Their bravery and commitment during the Adventureland rescue are exactly why we must continue to support and invest in the men and women who protect our communities every day.”
Town officials said the successful rescue highlights the importance of continued investment in emergency response training, equipment, and resources. The Wave Twister ride remained closed following the incident pending a safety review.
The Babylon Town Board concluded the recognition by thanking the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and all emergency responders who worked together to ensure that what could have been a tragedy ended with every passenger safely rescued.
The event served as a reminder that behind every emergency response are highly trained individuals ready to answer the call when their community needs them most.
