Manetuck Elementary School in the West Islip Union Free School District’s shared decision team hosted a Community Helper Day on Jan. 18. All grade levels visited with the different tables stationed throughout the room.

Members of the West Islip Fire Department, Suffolk County police officers from the Third Precinct and a local sheriff spoke with the students about their career paths, how they help the community and offered tips for staying safe in an emergency.

Former and current Manetuck parents also assisted in sharing their careers with the students. Ariana Pareti and Christine Elefante spoke to students about what it’s like to be a radiologic technician and a respiratory therapist. Jeffrey Regan shared some of the many STEM career options and talked about his work in the aerospace industry. Manetuck teacher assistant Patti Love demonstrated Irish step dancing for the students, while parent Alison Ryczek Weir demonstrated the art of pottery making.
