Legislator Donnelly Honors Melville Son And Mother For Heroic Actions

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized Melville residents Jovani Moss and Natechia Campbell-Moss for their courageous actions that helped save the life of a neighbor during a house fire in March.

On the morning of March 31, Half Hollow Hills HS East freshman Jovani Moss was waiting at his bus stop when he noticed flames coming from a nearby home belonging to an elderly neighbor. He immediately alerted his mother, Natechia Campbell-Moss, and then called 9-1-1 to ensure first responders were notified without delay. Natechia rushed to the residence and repeatedly knocked and rang the bell to alert and assist the homeowner. Receiving no response, she forced open the door and, despite the intense heat and dangerous conditions, was able to locate the disoriented resident and guide her safely out of the home.

“As a firefighter and EMT, I know every second matters in an emergency,” said Legislator Donnelly, who is a retired FDNY Lieutenant and a four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer. “Jovani and Natechia remained calm, acted decisively, and demonstrated tremendous courage in a moment when it was truly needed, and those instincts and actions directly contributed to a life-saving outcome. Their willingness to step forward and help a neighbor in need reflects the very best of our community, and it was an honor to recognize and thank them before the Legislature.”

The pair were honored at the April 21 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge, where Legislator Donnelly presented them with special proclamations for their heroism and quick thinking.
