Hempstead Lake State Park Schedule Of Events

Hempstead Lake State Park, in West Hempstead offers the following interpretative programs in the spring of 2024. There will be a fee of $4.00 per adult, $4.00 per child, and children under 3 are free. An $8 parking fee is in effect during the fee collecting season. Reservations are required and will be taken two weeks prior to the program. If you are unable to keep your reservation, please call and cancel so others may have the opportunity to attend.  Please be prompt.  If others are waiting, your place may be given to them if you have not arrived when the program starts.  To make a reservation, please visit Eventbrite.com and search for #NatureEdventure or #HempsteadLake.

Tiny Tots: “Nature Discoveries”
Explore the natural world around you.  These programs will connect children and their parents with nature through short walks, animal visitors, and crafts.  Children aged 3-5.

Backyard Birds: (Family Program)

Saturday April 13th 1:00 – 2:30pm
Explore the wonderful world of birds! Recognize the feathery friends living in your backyard and decorate a birdhouse for them!

Earth Day Mindfulness Walk: (Adult Program)
Sunday April 14th 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Come create a nature journal and then join them as we hike through Hempstead Lake State Park.

Earth Day Cleanup Event: (Family Program)
Saturday April 20th 10:00 – 11:30am 
Get outside and celebrate Earth Day at Hempstead Lake State Park by helping keep it clean. Meet at the Environmental Education and Resiliency Center at Field 1. FREE EVENT! No registration required.

The Lorax Storytime: (Family Program)
Sunday April 21st 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Celebrate Earth Day with us as they enter the world of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax!

Rainbow Science (Children’s Program) @ Valley Stream State Park
Saturday April 27th 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Together they will create fun rainbow science experiments and predict the results! Free Program!

Terrific Terrariums: (Children’s Program)
Sunday April 28th   1:00 – 2:30 pm
Discover the wonders of the water cycle! Join them as they get an up-close view of the water cycle in action and create your very own terrarium.

I Love My Park Day Cleanup: (Family Event)
Saturday May 4th 9:00am – 12:00pm 
Join us for our annual I Love My Park Day trash cleanup. All ages are welcome. Visit www.ptny.org/events/i-love-my-park-day to register. Free Event!

Mud Science: (Family Program)
Sunday May 5th 1:00 – 2:30pm 
How do scientists conduct experiments? Together they will create fun experiments and predict the results! Who knows what kinds of things they will discover with mud!

Gardening 101 for Kids: (Family Program)
Saturday May 11th 1:00 – 2:30pm
Join them for gardening tips and a fun craft! Paint your own pot and plant your own flower to take home.

Elephants Everywhere: (Family Program)
Saturday May 18th 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islanders Heritage month and learn about the incredible Indian Elephant. Create and take home a beautiful elephant craft.

Haiku Hike and Workshop: (Family Program)
Sunday May 19th 1:00 – 2:30pm 
Celebrate Asian American Pacific Islanders Heritage Month and join them for a workshop on the traditional Japanese poetry form of Haiku. They will go on a hike and compose Haikus based on their surroundings and observations.

Bear Bonanza: (Children’s Program)
Saturday June 1st 1:00 – 2:30pm 
Celebrate National Bear Day with us by learning all things bears! There will be bear trivia and a fun craft.

Beautiful Bees: (Adult Program)
Sunday June 2nd 1:00 – 2:30pm 
We will be discussing the importance of bees in our ecosystem and how they contribute to our daily lives. We will also paint candles.

Get Outdoors & Get Together Day (Family Event)

Meet at Field 1.

Nature Meditation Walk: (Family Program) 
Sunday June 9th 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Join them on a meditative and peaceful walk around Hempstead Lake State Park.

Spring Awakening (Family Program) @ Valley Stream State Park
Saturday June 15th 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Prepare to use your green thumbs in this hands-on program. Help them ready their gardens for the upcoming season and discover the fun of gardening.

Weaving Workshop: (Adult Program)
Saturday June 22nd 10:00am – 12:30pm 
They will be using reeds and other materials found in nature to weave different things such as mats and animals.
