The Harborfields Music Department made its presence felt throughout the community during the December ramp-up to the holiday season. Practically ubiquitous in a three-week span, students and faculty appeared at the Greenlawn Civic Association tree lighting and menorah lighting, the Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach tree lighting at Centerport Methodist Church, the Centerport Fire Department tree lighting, the Carillon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Huntington, and a joint Tri-M Music Honor Society/Youth Directions and Alternatives caroling caravan.
That whirlwind of activity, blanketing the district in good cheer, saw students giving their festive all for their fellow man. High school instrumentalists and vocalists, literally playing their part, underscored numerous gatherings in the area.
“The high school Tri-M members have given so much to this community and are truly living up to the oath they take when they are inducted, which is to ‘share joy through music,’” said Allison Scilla, the school’s band director and Tri-M adviser. “I couldn’t be prouder of their eagerness to take part in all of these activities that bring joy to so many.”
Budding musicians at the elementary level, not to be outdone, saw to it that good cheer made its way to our treasured elders.
“It was so wonderful to have fifth grade students create some holiday magic for the residents of Carillon,” Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School Choir Director Laura Mara said. “Everyone was smiling from ear to ear, and it was such a beautiful sight to behold.”
“I can’t say enough about the incredible work that our students and their teachers do for and in the community,” K-12 Music Department Coordinator Dan Bilawsky said. “They’re all so generous in giving so freely of their time and talents. It really is a testament to the spirit of our inclusive Harborfields family.”
