Girl Scouts from different troops across Nassau County recently joined with Town of North Hempstead and National Grid officials to plant a tree grove at Tully Park in New Hyde Park. Girl Scouts of Nassau County purchased and planted the trees as part of a $75,000 grant through National Grid’s Project C program.

Through the collaboration, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has already added over 185 trees throughout Nassau County that are native to its individual park regions. The initiative is part of GSUSA’s Tree Promise, which encourages Girl Scouts across the nation to plant 5 million trees in 5 years to contribute to overall environmental progression and to protect and honor new and existing trees. Tree species are chosen based on their form, leaf color, native and non-native features and the lushness of their tree canopies.

In addition to planting over 185 trees, National Grid’s sponsorship includes the Project C patch program to help empower girls and provide them with the resources to excel as they pursue careers in STEM-related fields. So far 270 Girl Scouts have achieved patches through a series of activities for Girl Scouts that promoted environmental advocacy, social justice, workforce development and community engagement.
