More than 150 students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently attended Camp Read Away, a memorable evening event in the school gymnasium last held prior to the pandemic. Students rotated between 10 different stations, including stories, crafts, camping games and an amazing star lab, where students were educated by Deer Park High School science teacher Katelyn O’Brien, Deer Park High School English as a new language teacher Amy Pellegrino and constellation expert Mark Levine.

“We were so happy to bring Camp Read Away back after a long hiatus,” teacher Beth Ann Vahl said. “We started to do Camp Read Away as a way for children to come and listen to stories, read by wonderful JFK teachers and staff while sitting in tents and ‘roasting marshmallows.’ We have a very supportive PFC at JFK. Stephanie Baio and her team set up snacks for parents and gave each child a free book as a gift. The principals and I were so excited to have our students attend this event, and every single one left with a smile on their face.”
