The Ward Melville Science Olympiad team has qualified for the national tournament due to its outstanding performance at the New York State tournament held last month.
Science Olympiad tournaments are competitions focused on scientific knowledge and engineering innovations. Team members compete by building devices in advance to perform a task and by taking exams in various disciplines of science.
Ward Melville High School won second place overall at the state tournament which gave them the opportunity to advance. The team had its best overall score in ten years. Additionally, team members won top ten medals in 18 out of 23 events, with first place medals in Wi-Fi Lab and Detector Building – two engineering events that required team members to build their own Wi-Fi routers and digital scales. The team also won first place in Anatomy and Physiology and had notable placements in the Forensics, It’s About Time, Astronomy and Bridge categories.
“We are so excited for this cohort of team members to experience their first in-person national tournament. It is an honor for us to share our passion for Science Olympiad with the best teams in the nation and it is sure to be an unforgettable weekend for everyone involved,” said coaches Jenny Serigano and Mark Suesser.
The national tournament will be held in-person for the first time in four years and will be hosted by Wichita State University in Kansas from May 19-20. This marks the second year in a row Ward Melville has qualified for the national tournament.
