Now in its 16th year, the annual pumpkin carving/decorating tradition at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in the West Islip School District keeps getting more creative every year. The pumpkins were on display in the school’s lobby at the end of October and 10 winners were crowned the best in show on Oct. 27. Students and their families were encouraged to create a pumpkin and more than 270 were entered into the contest. Each pumpkin is given a number, and students can vote on their favorite creation. Students are encouraged to bring in change and cast their vote after viewing the display. Pumpkins are then awarded a variety of different titles including scariest, most creative and more. Paul J. Bellew collects more than $1,000 each year for donation to local families this holiday season.
