Connetquot Board Of Education Celebrates Academic Accomplishments

During the April 4 public meeting of the Connetquot Board of Education, the trustees recognized several academic accomplishments.

Director of Science, FACS and Technology Stephanie Burns introduced ninth grade science research team members Gabrielle DeCapua, Declan Doran, Michael Fabbri and Michael Ibraham, who were recently chosen as Regional Award Winners in the 31st annual Toshiba/NSTA Exploravision Science Competition, the largest science competition designed to build problem-solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills that are central to Next Generation Science Standards. Teacher John Halloran shared that the students have finalized and submitted the final materials for the national competition on their project, “Isolating and Producing Targeted Bacteriophages for the Eradication of African River Blindness.”

Connetquot High School junior Katerina Papandon was also recognized for her paper on “Media and the Stock Market of 1929,” which was selected to appear in the Spring 2023 edition of the Concord Review. The Concord Review is a quarterly journal that publishes academic research and student essays from around the world and reaches 47 states and 46 countries globally.

Additionally, Connetquot High School junior Victoria Douglas won first prize in Junior Achievement of New York’s 2022-2023 High School Heroes Essay Contest. Her essay, “What It Means to Be a High School Hero,” stressed the importance of developing personal financial literacy at a young age. She also imparted her knowledge to a younger generation of Connetquot students through the High School Heroes program. In addition to taking home the $500 grand prize, Victoria will be featured on the JA New York website and other Junior Achievement High School publications.
