Family members, friends, fellow firefighters, and community leaders gathered at the corner of Arnold Avenue and Lerner Street in West Babylon on June 16 to commemorate the life and sacrifice of Firefighter Michael Greene, marking the 20th anniversary of his line-of-duty death.
The ceremony was held at the intersection designated as Firefighter Michael Greene Way, a lasting tribute to the former member of the West Babylon Fire Department Truck Company who gave his life in service to his community on June 16, 2006.
Greene joined the West Babylon Fire Department on March 8, 1994, and quickly distinguished himself as a dedicated firefighter and leader. He served as Lieutenant from 2000 to 2001 and Captain from 2002 to 2003. His commitment to the fire service and his willingness to help others left a lasting impact on those who served alongside him.
The remembrance ceremony celebrated Greene’s life and legacy while recognizing the profound sacrifice he made in the line of duty. Attendees reflected on his dedication, courage, and the example he set for future generations of firefighters.
Town of Babylon Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney, who served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, emphasized the importance of preserving Greene’s memory.
“Twenty years later, Michael Greene’s legacy continues to inspire firefighters throughout our community,” said McSweeney. “He embodied the very best of the fire service—courage, selflessness, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. It is our responsibility to ensure that his sacrifice is never forgotten and that future generations understand the price that some pay in service to their neighbors.”
McSweeney also thanked the West Babylon Board of Fire Commissioners, the department’s chiefs, officers, and members for their continued dedication to honoring Greene’s memory.
“Memorials such as Firefighter Michael Greene Way serve as a permanent reminder that true heroes never die as long as their stories continue to be told,” McSweeney added. “Mike’s name, service, and sacrifice will forever remain a part of the West Babylon Fire Department and the community he loved.”
The ceremony concluded with a renewed commitment to remembering Greene’s life and service, ensuring that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters and residents alike.
