East Islip High School’s mock trial team competed in a series of civil law trials against 15 other teams from Suffolk and Nassau counties in the 49th annual Law Day tournament, held April 20 at Northport High School.
East Islip’s B team of Michael Collina, Hunter Lasiak, Erin McLoughlin and Olivia Stepanenko put on a strong showing in the preliminary rounds, and the A team of Julia Fink, Jacob Franchi and Hanna Ross went undefeated. Fink, Franchi and Ross subsequently faced and eliminated Northport and Massapequa in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the championship round, East Islip was plaintiff versus Plainview-Old Bethpage’s defense. While Plainview prevailed, East Islip put on an excellent performance. This was the fourth time that East Islip’s mock trial team placed second at Law Day.
The presiding judge, the Hon. James Hudson of the Suffolk County Supreme Court, commended the East Islip team for “demonstrating the highest levels of professionalism and knowledge of the law.”
