Harry Saxton of the Wantagh UFSD, who attends Nassau BOCES Iris Wolfson High School (IWHS), earned the prestigious George Farber Outstanding Student Award this year. The award celebrates a variety of Harry’s remarkable attributes including passion, perseverance, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship and a willingness to help others. Board members, administrators, staff and family were on hand to celebrate at a special ceremony earlier this spring.

Since coming to IWHS, Harry has made a tremendous amount of progress. He has developed strategies to better manage his emotions, behave appropriately, and reform his attitude towards school and learning. He now has a renewed approach toward his academics, goes above and beyond on school projects and class work, consistently follows school rules and is highly motivated to succeed. He has transformed into a model student with grades in the 90s and above in all of his classes, and has had the distinction of being named Student of the Quarter.

Harry is a leader in and out of the classroom, and is well liked by his teachers. He is getting a jumpstart on his career goal of working with cars in the automotive program at Barry Tech, where he is excelling. He is also employed part-time at a local deli, where he is a dedicated worker who takes his job responsibilities seriously. Harry takes the time to analyze situations before he speaks or acts, and takes an active interest in school improvement. Recently, he suggested that a discount be offered as an incentive to students who work in the school store.

“Not only do these students demonstrate the very best of Nassau BOCES, each of them has also shown the true spirit of George Farber,” said James Widmer, Deputy Superintendent. “They all have passion, determination, enthusiasm, outstanding character, scholarship, and willingness to help others. Their collective stories are an inspiration to us all.”

For the past 16 years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by his love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.
