With a heat advisory in effect for Nassau County beginning at noon today and lasting through 8pm on Wednesday and with countless residents still without power, I have activated the County’s cooling centers for a safe place for residents to beat the heat in the air-conditioning and charge their devices. Residents can also keep cool at County pools where we will be extending hours to provide additional relief.
Heat indexes are expected to be above 90 degrees Monday through Wednesday, so I want to urge residents – especially seniors and parents of young children – to take extra precautions during this potentially dangerous stretch of heat and humidity. Drink your fluids, limit your time in the sun, check on elderly neighbors, and never leave children or pets in the car – even for a quick errand.
I have called on PSEG Long Island to refund utility bills and reimburse residents for perishable items lost during this unacceptable, extensive power outage. I will continue to demand answers from PSEG and do everything I can to get residents back on the grid, while providing some relief from the heat in the meantime.
