Northwell Health was recently named to the 2023 “Hospitals and health systems with spine and neuroscience programs to know” by Becker’s Hospital Review. Northwell was one of only 70 hospitals and health systems nationwide to make the list.
According to Becker’s, the institutions on the list are nationally recognized for their spine and neuroscience programs. They are committed to expanding access to care and continually improving patient outcomes.
“I’m proud of the Northwell spine and neuroscience program, which serves as a hub of multidisciplinary care, innovation and research to provide around-the-clock advanced, integrated and patient-centered neurological and neurosurgical care,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell’s Neurology Service Line, co-director of the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Northwell Health, and chair of neurology at Lenox Hill Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, State Island University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. “This recognition from Becker’s proves what I’ve known: that Northwell has some of the most amazing spinal doctors and neurologists there are.”
The Becker’s list is the latest accolade for Northwell Health’s spine and neurological centers. The spine programs at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, LIJ Valley Stream, LIJ Forest Hills and North Shore University Hospital have been named Advanced Spine Centers of Excellence by The Joint Commission – the only ones in New York State to receive that honor.
Northwell also has award-winning stroke centers at North Shore University Hospital, South Shore University Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. In 2015, North Shore became the first hospital on Long Island to receive advanced certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. It was followed by South Shore and Lenox Hill in 2023. The hospitals also earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval, and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association heart check mark for their ability to treat the most complex stroke cases.
“Taking care of patients with neurological and spinal problems is a team sport, and this recognition from Becker’s shows we have one of the best teams out there,” said Daniel Sciubba, MD, senior vice president of neurosurgery at Northwell Health, chair of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center and co-director of the Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Northwell Health. “Broad specialty support with efficient navigation and access is required to support the needs of each patient with a focus that is unique to that person’s situation.”
