Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District held a grand opening celebration of its new little library on March 21. After reading “Little Libraries Everywhere” by Laura Johnson, three students – Evelyn Ballaera, Estuardo Perez-Ceropin, and Deandre Gooden – wrote letters to Susan E. Wiley Elementary School Principal Ms. Florio presenting an idea to upcycle the school’s former telephone booth into a little library.
The Susan E. Wiley Elementary School student council, under the supervision of Mrs. Trotta, took their idea and put it into action. Inspired by the work of Dr. Seuss, the student council – with the help of Mr. Wainright – brought the creative vision to reality. The idea: “Take a book; leave a book; no library card needed.” Teachers and students have already donated gently used books to fill the library. This little library is meant to encourage a love of reading for years to come.
