The Merrick Union Free School District had a lot to smile about on Sept. 1. Not only
was it the first day back to school but it also marked the district’s 100th school year of operation.

Superintendent Dr. Dominick Palma welcomed students to Lakeside on the first day of school.
“The staff of the Merrick Schools will continue to provide a safe and nurturing
school climate,” said Superintendent Dr. Dominick Palma. “It is our priority to continue to promote social emotional learning throughout the school day as your child’s well-being is our goal.”

Students at Birch dove right into learning fun with activities aimed at promoting teamwork.
The first day of school was clearly a success as the children entered into the Chatterton, Birch and Lakeside schools buildings with huge smiles, eager to meet their new teachers and ready for a great year ahead.
