Round numbers have been the goal for third graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as they take their mathematical abilities to the next level.
Students have recently been learning how to round two and three-digit numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. They are exploring different methods for rounding, such as the number line technique. After identifying the halfway point between two round numbers, students determine if their number rounds higher or lower.
They also have many hands-on tools at their disposal. Their SmartPAL dry erase surfaces allow them to draw out their number lines, while the one, 10 and 100 counter blocks represent numbers in a very visual way.
