The Lynwood Avenue Destination Imagination team placed first in the New York Eastern Regional Tournament and will advance to states in April. The team, made up of fourth and fifth graders, successfully completed the scientific challenge – a task that blends scientific research with performance art.
Students were challenged to create and present a story about a character whose discovery of an artifact leads to a finding. They had to design a puppet to portray a character from the past and include an archaeologic investigation through their skit. The team incorporated song and dance to transition their story. They performed under an eight-minute time constraint and designed their set within a $150 budget.
In addition to receiving first place, the Lynwood team received the Renaissance Award at the regional competition. This award recognizes outstanding design, engineering, execution and performance. Students were honored for demonstrating extraordinary effort and preparation, as well as outstanding skill.
Before heading to states, the Lynwood team presented their performance in front of their peers. They held a question-and-answer session with Lynwood students about their design, process and performance. Students were able to understand the overall message of the team’s performance – to communicate feelings and resolve conflicts peacefully.
Sachem wishes the Lynwood team the best of luck at the state tournament as they inch closer to the global finals this May.
