Legislator Gonzalez Distributes Backpacks & School Supplies to Over 800 Students

On Saturday August 28, 2021, numerous community groups and nonprofit organizations joined Legislator Sam Gonzalez in distributing free backpacks and school supplies to members of the community. The event also included fun activities for families and youth to participate in, as well as performances by: Fearless Footsteps; Felix Andino; Spazy Fella; Klass Santana; Mambo Loco; Elegancia de Salsa; Sonora 495; Pedro Pocholo Segundo; and the Boricua Legends.

Over 800 backpacks were distributed at the event, enabling families and students to receive much needed school supplies as local school districts begin opening for the academic year. The event, which took place at the Brentwood Union Free School District Administration Office, serves as a memorable highlight in the history of Legislator Gonzalez’s community impact.

“It is truly wonderful to be joined by so many organizations within the community in giving back to those who need it most during this unparalleled time,” said Legislator Gonzalez. The backpack drive event served to aid the lives of students who are now entering schools during an unprecedented time, on top of the already increasing financial pressures that have affected families due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Fidelis Care is proud to have co-sponsored the Seventh Annual Salsa Festival, together with the only Hispanic elected official in Suffolk County, Legislator Gonzalez,  as these cultural events unite the community and show that Hispanics can contribute significantly towards making our County a diverse place,” said John Franco, Community Relations Specialist of Fidelis Care.

These efforts would not have been possible without the contribution and assistance from the following organizations: Brentwood Union Free School District, Central Islip Union Free School District; Fidelis Care; PRONTO; Jibaritos with Troops; The Long Island Ruff Ryders; Island Federal Credit Union; Moloney Funeral Home; AT&T; Federal Chaplains; The Long Island Punisherz; Rosyln Bank; and SASI. Their commendable actions are sure to warrant an excellent beginning to the incoming school year.

Legislator Gonzalez looks forward to leading more community events that continue to benefit the lives of constituents within the 9th Legislative District, as well as the continued impact of the organizations that aided in this event.
