Islip celebrated homecoming on Sept. 24 with an action-packed day of community pride and engaging activities, blessed by sunshine and crisp weather. Led by fire trucks, members of the board of education, district and school administrators, and Islip High School alumni, the parade began at Town Hall at noon. Each of the district’s schools joyfully marched with banners waving, while high schoolers presented grade-level floats making creative use of pop culture, from Marvel and pirates to “Stranger Things” and “Toy Story.”
Islip’s younger students then enjoyed a fabulous carnival on the soccer field, replete with games of skill and inflatable slides, before the varsity football team kicked off its big game against Half Hollow Hills West.
At halftime, Homecoming King Connor Autera and Homecoming Queen Olivia Gardner were announced to the cheers of the Homecoming Court and the “Bleacher Creature” students in the stands. This was followed by exceptional performances by the school’s cheerleaders, kickline, marching band and color guard. Although the Bucs sadly did not prevail in their contest, it was nonetheless a marvelous day to remember for the Islip community.
“Islip High School’s homecoming was sensational,” Principal Dr. Lara Gonzalez said. “The large number of students of all ages and community members who turned out to watch the parade down Main Street, participate in the homecoming carnival and root for our Buccaneers during the football game was a testament to the pride Islip takes in its school system. I am so impressed by the level of school spirit and support for our high school.”
