Idle Hour Elementary Students Build Their Own Communities

To round out their social studies unit on types of communities, second graders at Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District created their own urban, rural or suburban landscapes.

Each student was asked to choose a community they could envision themselves living in and creatively bring it to life in the form of a model. They utilized the writing process to generate a script about what one would find in their specific community, using vocabulary words they’d learned in the unit such as gridlock and livestock.

Whether they chose an urban, rural or suburban landscape, each student implemented unique touches such as sparkling lights, aluminum foil towers, water bottle skyscrapers, real sand and more. They presented both their display and oral presentation to their parents and visitors.
