Students at Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District participated in Halloween-themed activities that assisted them in honing their math, writing, reading and directional skills.
Dressed in their costumes for the holiday, the first grade students divided into stations where they played Bingo, drew the face of a pumpkin according to specific directions, sorted candy and used a graph to compare the number of pieces, and read Michael Yu’s “How to Catch a Monster.”
Fourth grade students wrote a Halloween-themed article called “House for Sale.”
Using descriptive and persuasive language, the students described a haunted house’s qualities that make it special. For example, one student described the rusty swimming pool and the creaking floors that make the house stand out from others. After writing their article, the class created a decorative ornament of the house they described in their essays.
