Finding Plant Life In Unexpected Places

The fifth graders at Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District have been studying weather and deposition as part of their recent science unit. As the weather improved, the students ventured into the courtyard to continue their hands-on lessons. Students observed plants that were growing in unexpected places, such as in cracks in the concrete and in the rock garden. The students had to locate three different plants, sketch the plants and measure the width of the crack and height and width of the plants. When they returned to the classroom, the students reflected on if they were surprised by any of their outdoor findings.
