East Islip Wrestlers Win Second Consecutive Rocky Gilmore Classic

East Islip High School’s wrestling team captured first place overall in the 36th annual Rocky Gilmore Classic, which the school hosted on Jan. 6. East Islip had 13 place winners and totaled 212.5 team points to win the tournament for the second consecutive year.

Sophomore Rocco Destefano (at 101 pounds) and senior captain Nicholas Groneman (190 pounds) both were champions in their events. Other finalists included junior Anthony Liedtke-Merida (116 pounds), freshman Gryffin Alfalla (131 pounds), sophomore Sean O’Shea (138 pounds) and senior captain Anthony Avitabile (145 pounds). Junior Vasilios Dimou (160 pounds) finished in third place, while senior captain Dylan Aristides (131 pounds) and sophomore Christan Horeis (190 pounds) both took fourth. Finishing in fifth place were sophomore Noah Hodge (138 pounds), junior Christopher Coleman (170 pounds), junior Chase Canfora (215 pounds) and sophomore Brian Csoban (285 pounds).

“It was a great day of wrestling,” coach Michael Longobardi said.

Next on the team’s schedule was the League V Dual Meet Championships on Jan. 10, which they also won, qualifying East Islip for the Suffolk County Dual Meet Championships on Jan. 17.
