East Islip High School junior Sophia Pepe competed at the New York State Gymnastics Championship on March 2, leading the Section XI team to a third-place finish.
Last November, Pepe had participated in the at the individual county championship, where she qualified to represent the Section XI state team on the vault with a score of 9.2. The state team is composed of 11 girls from all over section XI, only 9 of which actually compete at the state meet. As you can imagine, this is a very difficult thing to do.
“At the state meet, Sophia was tasked with being the lead performer in the first event of the competition, which isn’t always easy, but she did it effortlessly and her performance helped to set a strong tone for Section XI,” varsity gymnastics coach Nicole O’Connor said. “Congratulations to Sophia on this amazing accomplishment, and for representing not only East Islip but Section XI.”
