East Islip High School’s girls varsity winter track and field team won their second consecutive Suffolk County championship on Feb. 2 with a terrific 75 points, placing ahead of Sayville (71) and Hauppauge (49). The team was guided to their latest victories by coach John Reynolds and assistant coach Nicole O’Connor.
Grace Micali opened the scoring with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 35-06.00. She followed that with a third-place finish in the high jump with an outstanding 5-foot jump. Kathryn Simonetti pitched in with a 4-foot, 10-inch jump to earn fourth place.
In the racewalk, Brianna Tucci placed second, posting a season best time of 8:15.7.
Danielle Simonetti set a new school record of 3:05.00 in the 1,000-meter race, placing second. Just 45 minutes later, she took home the county championship in the 600- meter race with a time of 1:40.13.
The meet’s fortunes turned when Chloe Garatina claimed her second consecutive county championship in the long jump, setting a new school record with a jump of 18 feet, 1.75 inches.
In the relays, the 4×800-meter relay team of Ali Coppinger, Kaylee O’Boyle, Kathryn Simonetti and Caylee Smith turned out an impressive third place finish of 10:23.84. The 4×400-meter relay team of Avery Ernst, Danielle Birner, Alexa Menendez and Danika Tidridge zoomed to a huge second-place finish with a time of 4:14.88. With the county championship on the line, the 4×200-meter relay team of Maya Brown, Chloe Garatina, Kaylee Garatina and Danielle Simonetti took third place to close the meet out with a time of 1:49.25.
