At the East Islip School District Board of Education’s June 21 meeting, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School fourth grader Emma Kowalik was recognized for winning first place in the 2023 Elementary School Science Fair, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on June 10. She also came in first in the Virtual New York State Science Fair. Kowalik, whose parents are both science teachers, had previously won RCK’s school science fair for her memorable “Loaded Diapers” project, which tested five diaper brands to see which one worked the best.

“This is a tremendous achievement and we are very proud of Emma,” said Superintendent Paul Manzo.
