Deer Park High School’s DECA club returned with four trophies from the New York State Career Development Conference. Another three Deer Park students earned medals at the annual contest in March at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. A total of 36 Deer Park DECA students competed, among more than 2,000 high school business students from across the state.
Top five overall trophy winners, all finishing in second place, were the team of Sasha Khellawan and Brandon Lanaro (Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making), Luis Rodriguez (Personal Financial Literacy) and Sidra Syed (Principles of Marketing). These four trophy winners earned the right to move on to compete in DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida at the end of April.
Top 10 test medal winners were Shubat Alam (Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making), Jade Griffin (Apparel and Accessories) and Madison Griffin (Principles of Marketing).
Additionally, senior Ryder Min was inducted into the New York DECA Honor Society, and Katia Papailler was elected to serve as a state officer. Papailler will be the vice president of competition for the 2023-2024 school year.
“Congratulations to all of our students on a job well done,” Deer Park DECA adviser Gregory Menig said.
