Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School held its annual Week in Clay during the beginning of January. Every fifth grader at JFK enjoyed their own Day in Clay in Briana Nussbaum’s art classroom, creating bowls or plates that were able to be customized using many different types of tools.
The students enjoyed using stamps and texture tools to create interesting patterns and designs in their clay. Some students even chose to add 3D elements to their pieces. After the projects were finished and dried out, they went into a kiln to help the clay solidify. Once the projects came out of the kiln, they were ready for color, and the fifth graders glazed their projects using a variety of colors. When this step was complete, the projects went into the kiln again. Finally, the colors turned bright and glossy and the students could take their creations home.
“I love working on the clay project with the fifth graders each year,” Nussbaum said. “This workshop-style lesson is something different for a lot of students and they love putting their own creativity into their bowls or plates. We always have a lot of fun and it is something that many students keep for years and years. It is so special to be a part of that memory for them.”
