The Northport Historical Society and Museum is excited to announce a series of festive and educational events for the month of December. While they’ve been preserving and sharing the rich history of their community since 1962, this year marks half a century of calling their present location, 215 Main Street, home. As part of their ongoing 50th Anniversary celebrations, we are honored to receive a special “50th Anniversary Proclamation” from Northport Village.
Throughout December, they invite you to join them for a variety of festive and educational events that highlight both the history and holiday spirit of Northport
Kids Make History Cove Grand Opening
Sunday, December 15 | 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Bring the kids for a fun and educational afternoon as they unveil our new Kids Make History Cove! Kids can dress up in Victorian-era clothing, try out vintage technology like rotary phones and typewriters, and explore old-fashioned toys. Santa will be making a special appearance for photos, so be sure to bring your camera! There will also be a fun elf scavenger hunt throughout the museum, with prizes for those who find all the hidden elves.
As part of their ongoing commitment to celebrate Northport’s history, each month they will be featuring a “Northport Notable” – a local person from history whose story has shaped our community. This month, they’re thrilled to highlight Henry Scudder, a Revolutionary War spy from Northport who played a crucial role in gathering intelligence during the American Revolution. In honor of Henry’s exciting and adventurous life, they’ll be offering a Crack the Code activity, where kids can engage in a hands-on game of deciphering secret codes, just as Washington’s Culper Spy Ring did to help the American cause. This event is sure to be both educational and fun for young history enthusiasts!
Historic Main Street Walking Tour
Sunday, December 15 | 1:00 PM
Join local historian Dan Sheehan for a fascinating and informative walking tour of Northport’s Historic Business District. As you stroll along Main Street, hear the stories of the people, places, and events that have shaped the village, including notable figures like Jack Kerouac, the Northport Oyster Barons, local rum runners, and the iconic trolley. This tour is a must for history enthusiasts and those looking to learn more about the town’s past.
Winter is Coming Holiday Party
Tuesday, December 17 | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Celebrate the winter season in style at their Winter is Coming holiday party! Enjoy festive drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and music while exploring our seasonal exhibit highlighting Northport’s unique history. This event is for adults ages 21+ and offers a cozy, relaxed atmosphere to mingle with fellow community members while embracing the warmth and spirit of the holiday season.
In addition to these exciting events, they would like to take a moment to express their gratitude to Northport Village, especially Mayor Donna Koch, for presenting the Northport Historical Society and Museum with a “50th Anniversary Proclamation” in recognition of our ongoing efforts to preserve the rich history of Northport. As they look back on more than five decades of service to the community, they are proud to continue to share their local history with residents and visitors alike.
Terry Reid, Executive Director of the Northport Historical Society and Museum, shared her excitement about the milestone:
“We are truly honored to receive this Proclamation from the Village of Northport. It is a testament to the hard work and passion of everyone involved in preserving our town’s rich history over the years. As we mark this milestone, we are looking forward to celebrating with the community and making this holiday season extra special with our festive events. We hope everyone will join us for a warm and joyful holiday experience at the museum!”
