On Dec. 16, the Bayport-Blue Point School District’s SEL Committee and the Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Wellness Club hosted the second annual BBP Community and Cocoa 5K Fun Run/Walk.
To open the race, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Hearney said, “This event is yet another example of how our students, staff and community come together to promote and support such an important cause.” The event was intended to foster community involvement, raise suicide awareness and support a charitable cause. Proceeds from the event will be utilized by the high school Wellness Club for student programs and donated to organizations that provide prevention and post-suicide counseling support and care to families.
The first 150 participants registered received a T-shirt designed by a Bayport-Blue Point student. Ahead of the 5K race, a half-mile “fun run” was added for elementary students. The participants received an ornament, hot chocolate and were able to watch a classic holiday movie while the 5K took place.
“What we are most proud of is that there was tremendous student participation in volunteering,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Robert Haas. This year, there were over 225 participants in the 5K race.
