Academy Street Elementary School students and their guests cozied up to a proverbial campfire to participate in the school’s annual Campfire Storytime.
Principal Kerry Vann spoke to the parents and caregivers about the importance of reading with children. She explained that reading together helps to develop fluency, helps children learn about background knowledge and develop vocabulary. “It is one of the most important things you can do for your child,” Ms. Vann said. “Reading with them for five to 10 minutes a day will go far in helping them grow as leaders.”
The students pulled out their favorite books to read with guests for the first portion of the program. Ms. Corso also read “Bear Snores” to all of the students. There was also a representative from the Bayport-Blue Point Public Library who provided the opportunity for students to fill out a form to acquire a library card.
