This community event is unlike any other Thanksgiving event because it is hosted at a restaurant with no prices on the menu. Long Islander’s that need a helping hand can dine for free. The Toast Coffeehouse is again teaming up with Harmony Café to make this dinner possible. Together in 2021, they have served over 300 holiday meals during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“We want to give people a dinner they will remember sharing with family and friends as a joyful holiday experience and without the stressor of worrying if they can afford the restaurant meal,” Rosemarie Mccarthy, Harmony Café founder, said.
Toast Coffeehouse uses its volunteer restaurant staff, alongside Harmony Café’s volunteers to serve the community with a traditional thanksgiving dinner with all the trimming and desserts.
“The situation this year has been complicated by the rate of inflation, which is at a 40-year high,” Mccarthy said. “The lower your income, the larger proportion of it is spent on essentials. Those essential have risen at an alarming rate. For example, electricity has gone up more than half, and food costs are 14 percent higher than last year. We want to help avoid a situation where a family must choose between eating a holiday meal or paying their utility bill.”
