A One-Day Art Pop-Up Of Caribbean Music & Culture

BACCA (Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts) and Curator Harper Bella present The Spirit of Carnival, a one-day art pop-up event of Caribbean music and culture, in Wyandanch Plaza, 10 Station Drive, Wyandanch, NY 11798, June 24, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The event is free to the public, and is sponsored by Creatives Rebuild New York through the Artist Employment Program in partnership with Wyandanch Plaza Association. This Pop-Up is part of an ongoing project celebrating art forms that are part of global carnival festivals and will celebrate Caribbean American heritage month. 

To celebrate Caribbean heritage through the arts, several events and workshops will take place throughout the day:

  • Photography Installation featuring fine arts photographers, curator Harper Bella, Jaaydn Rogers, and others. 
  • Adlib Steel Pan Orchestra Performance
  • Haitian Dance Performance sponsored by Wyandanch Plaza Association
  • Moko Jumbie Stilt Walkers
  • Carnival Headpiece Workshop for all ages provided by WIADCA (West Indian American Day Carnival Association)

Carnival is celebrated in over fifty countries across the world, each with its own cultural traditions, rituals, symbolic imagery, and art formsCarnival (Carnaval in Spanish, Portugese, and French-speaking countries; Carnevale in Italy; Fasnacht in Switzerland); Karnawal in Poland; and Karneval in Croatia and Germany), is the festivity that takes place in many countries around the world during the last days and hours before the Lenten season.
