Local nonprofit Girls on the Run Long Island will be holding its first Virtual 5K run for free on June 20, 2020 open to all who wish to participate. Traditionally a run held at Hofstra University to conclude the organization’s 10-week program for girls, the Spring 5K became a virtual run in response to COVID-19 and social distancing regulations.
With options to complete the 3.1 mile distance at “your place, your pace,” kids and adults alike are welcome to participate at no cost to them. By registering for the run at www.gotrlongisland.org/5k, participants will receive free downloadable goodies, such as a race bib to decorate and a finisher’s certificate. GOTR Long Island prize packs will also be raffled off, chosen from those who have registered, on June 20.
Leading up to the run, GOTR Long Island will share information about the run and fun activities on its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @gotrlongisland. This will include training for walking or running the 5K, indoor alternatives, and safety tips along with fun activities usually seen at a GOTR 5K. The traditional Happy Hair, kid-friendly hair coloring, and Bling Your Bib activities will be included. A schedule of events will be released at a later date for the June 20 run and will be shared on social media.
GIRLS ON THE RUN LONG ISLAND CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR GIRLS DURING COVID-19
As we are adjusting to a new way of life for the time being, Girls on the Run continues to provide inspiration, support and joy to our communities and girls during this challenging time. In addition to transitioning to a Virtual 5K event, we have mobilized other strategies to drive our mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident:
GOTR at Home provides fun and interactive lessons that girls and families can do at home, designed specifically for girls in mind! These lessons aim to provide girls of all abilities with an opportunity to learn and grow, just as they would have at their scheduled practices. GOTR at Home lessons are available in an easy-to-follow written format so girls and their grown-ups can participate together AND as a YouTube video series specifically for girls.
#GOTRGotYourBack aligns with the Girls on the Run mission and values and includes content, resources and activities to help girls and families stay physically active, connected and engaged. This digital campaign will offer alternative tips and activities for all families, volunteers, and followers to use and enjoy.
Follow Girls On the Run Long Island on Facebook, Instagram @gotrlongisland and website; www.gotrlongisland.org for updates and information about the virtual 5K.
About Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is a national physical activity-based positive youth development program for 3rd-8th grade girls. Participants develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care, create positive connections with peers and adults and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches that guide and mentor the girls. The ten-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Girls on the Run Long Island is proud to serve both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island.
