The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself.
The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic elementary schools.
“Thanks to the participation and support of these schools, and the sponsorship from some wonderful groups, families, and businesses, the event was able to clear nearly $17,000 for Tomorrow’s Hope.” Said Spinelli. “That brings the accumulated total that St’ Joseph’s has generated with this event for the Foundation to over $100,000 in our first five years.”
The top times submitted identified the following winners: The top three male finishers included 17 year-old Jack LaSalla of Garden City who posted the best 5K time at 17:30, just edging out Mike Cahill, 17, from Chaminade with 17:36. Third place went to 13 year old Aidan Ke from Great Neck with a time of 19:12.
For the women, Margaret McLoughlin, 16, from Kellenberg took the top spot with a time of 20:53, second place went to Brianne Zaremba, 16, from Kellenberg at 21:34 and third went to Sarah Biscardi, 23 from Garden City with a time of 22:28.

The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to ensure the excellence as well as the continuance of Catholic Schools on Long Island by increasing awareness and by providing scholarship and program funding for the needs of students and schools. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation gives hundreds of children each year the opportunity to attend Catholic elementary school.
