Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health, was once again named one of the most influential people in healthcare by Modern Healthcare magazine. Mr. Dowling has been a leader in healthcare for decades, most recently leading the fight against gun violence and combating the COVID-19 pandemic.
The publication released its list of “The 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare of 2023” in its Dec. 4 issue. He has consistently ranked among the top leaders in healthcare in the annual list, and was named the most influential in 2022. This is the 17th year he has been named to the list.
This prestigious recognition is determined by nominees’ peers and the editors of Modern Healthcare, and honors leaders in the healthcare industry based on their leadership and impact.
“It is an incredible honor to once again be named one of the most influential people in healthcare by Modern Healthcare,” said Mr. Dowling. “But it is an honor that is not mine alone. I share it with the tens of thousands of people at Northwell Health who work every day to not only care for our most critical patients, but to raise the health of the communities we call home. Healthcare is about more than just what happens in our hospitals – it’s about how we live our lives every day. It’s why we strive to end gun violence in our communities, and to make sure our children are as healthy and safe as can be.”
One of the most important issues Mr. Dowling has addressed in his time as CEO is the epidemic of gun violence in America. He is leading the charge to treat gun violence as a public health crisis, and is encouraging other healthcare leaders to join him. To that end, Northwell created the Center for Gun Violence Prevention, has hosted multiple Gun Violence Prevention Forums and has started a wide-reaching public campaign to raise awareness of gun violence. Northwell leaders were recently selected to join a new federal office of gun violence protection, created by President Joe Biden.
Northwell has also pledged $500 million to address youth mental health in the area. Part of that includes building a new 100-bed Child and Adolescent Mental Health Pavilion at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
“The 2023 honorees on our 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare reflect the providers, insurers, technology firms, government leaders, investors and others who have made oversized contributions to the industry in the past year,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “Our ranked list honors the C-suite decision-makers using their clout and influence to lead their organizations and make sweeping changes that affect patient care.”
Northwell also works to help people in need around the world. Since 2019, Northwell’s Center for Global Health has aligned with partners in Ecuador, India and Guyana and has donated thousands of pounds of medical supplies in response to the war in Ukraine, the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and soon to the war in the Middle East.
