Islip High School debuted a new First Responders Club this year, which meets weekly to explore both training and possible careers in the field. Student members recently earned certification in Stop the Bleed tourniquet training by certified science teacher Isabella Columbo. The club is also organizing a CPR training and certification course for students, as well as visits from guest speakers.
“I met with several students this summer who requested we start a First Responders Club to give them the opportunity to learn about the many first responder careers, from EMT to fire, police and dispatch,” said club adviser Renee Clock. “I thought it was a great idea, incorporating training and career exploration for students who may be interested in becoming a first responder, or who just want to learn how to help others in emergency situations.”
