On Jan. 6, the West Babylon Junior High School mock trial team visited a family court and experienced the judicial branch in action. The team was accompanied by club advisers Christine Bower-Cohen and Kaitlyn Barba. Students watched two cases and engaged in a question-and-answer session with the Hon. Judge Iliou. They saw the sheriff’s lock up and gained a deeper appreciation of the potential loss of personal liberty when one is alleged to have committed a crime. Finally, students learned about the Sixth Amendment right to speedy justice in Arraignment Court, where they saw a defendant being arraigned and were addressed by the Hon. Judge Jacobs.
